It is important to keep your carpet clean. Unfortunately, it is the quickest to get dirty and more often than not, is difficult, if possible, to keep completely spotless. D&R Flooring offers these simple tips, you can keep your soft cozy carpet free of spots and stains. Remember to never leave the newly clean spots wet – always dry your carpet to prevent mold or mildew.
Spill on, Blot off
Spills are inevitable. Rules and precautions may keep them at bay, but eventually, it will happen. Whenever they do, remember to blot the spot, not scrub or rub it. This is probably the most common tip people receive when trying to keep their carpet clean. Scrubbing the carpet can damage the fibers allowing the spill to be absorbed into the structure of the fiber. Blotting will allow the spill to be absorbed into a blotting cloth. Work from the outside-in, as the opposite can spread the stain.
Club Soda or Vinegar
This two-step combination is commonly referred for wine and beer spills, just dampen a cloth with club soda and blot the spill. If this doesn’t work, mix a one to one ratio of white vinegar to water in a spray bottle, spray it on the stain and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Use a sponge to absorb the solution and spill then rinse with warm water.
This is one of the most interesting tips we have found to keeping your carpet clean. One of the best removers of nearly every type of stain is shaving cream. Apply it directly to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes. Afterwards, spray with the vinegar/water and wipe away solution with cloth.
Common Stain Removers
- Gum -Ice (freezing the gum allows it to be pulled off)
- Blood -Hydrogen Peroxide
- Grease -Dishwashing Detergent with Water (2 drops to 1 cup)
- Wax -Iron (reheat wax by covering wax with a cloth and heating up the cloth)
- Candy -Mild Soap and water to dissolve and rinse away sugars
Regular Deep Cleaning
We humans unknowingly leave a trail of dirt everywhere we go – luckily, carpet hides it all from us. However, this means that one day you’ll see that your entire carpet became dirty. Regular steam cleaning (at least twice a year) will prevent this buildup of micro-dirt, oils, and dander, keeping your carpet long lasting and looking great.
