Best Ways to Keep Your Wood Flooring in Perfect Shape

Do you have wood floors in your home? Then you probably treasure them! While somewhat expensive to install (typically around $4,400), wood flooring also adds great value to your property, along with good looks. This means you’ll want to take care of your wood floors to preserve their appearance for as long as humanly possible.

To do that, you’ll need to keep the following tips and tricks in mind. Be sure to pass them along to the rest of your family – that way everyone will do their best to keep your hardwood floors in pristine shape.

    • Clean your wood floors weekly. This doesn’t mean occasionally sweeping or vacuuming and calling it good. Look into your wood floor manufacturer’s guidelines to find out what kind of cleaning products are the best for your specific floors. Then, thoroughly mop, sweep, and vacuum the floors at least once a week. Although the finish on your floor will become dull eventually, a stringent cleaning process will certainly delay the process.
    • Avoid getting the floors wet. You may be tempted to leave puddles of water on the wood floor, thinking that it won’t cause any serious damage. But in reality, moisture can seriously affect the longevity of your hardwood floors. Nix those steam mops, and wipe up spills as soon as they happen.
    • Leave shoes at the door. Every time someone enters your home wearing shoes, they track dirt and debris across the floors. They don’t mean to, but this can contribute to scratched, dirty wood. Ask that everyone take off their shoes before entering the area to keep the floors looking spotless for as long as you can.
    • Lay down rugs in high-traffic areas. Certain parts of your hardwood floors might be walked on more than others. For instance, hallways and entryways tend to take their fair share of beatings, as do kitchen floors. Consider placing protective rugs in the areas where nicks and scratches are most likely to occur.
