Hardwood flooring is often considered the most popular, most attractive flooring option for a home. Unlike other flooring solutions, hardwood provides a plethora of choices. You can select pine, oak, maple, cherry, or one of many others. Of course, each type of wood offers its own unique benefits, characteristics, and costs. Before installing one or another, consider your options. For most homeowners, the cost is going to be the deciding factor. So, let’s explore the cost of hardwood flooring further.

    Traditional Hardwood Flooring

When deciding on hardwood flooring, there are two primary types. The first type is traditional hardwood flooring. This type of flooring solution is available in narrow boards, about 3 inches wide, or planks measuring 7 inches or more. The cost of traditional hardwood flooring depends on the type of wood.

    • Low – Softwoods, including pine, usually cost $3 to $6 per square foot.
    • Mid – Perhaps the most popular choice of hardwood flooring, mid includes teak, American cherry, and oak. The cost is around $5 to $10 per square foot, depending on type.
    • High – High-end hardwood flooring, which is the most expensive, includes Brazilian walnut, tigerwood, mahogany, and cypress. The cost is around $8 to $14 per square foot.

These prices do not consider the installation cost. For traditional hardwood flooring, the installation cost is anywhere from $3 to $8 per square foot. It’s crucial to factor in installation cost when determining the total price of hardwood flooring.

    Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Your other option is engineered hardwood flooring. Engineered hardwood features real wood veneer bonded to layers of low-cost wood backing. There is an immense variety of engineered hardwood options available on the market. As such, homeowners have more choices and customization options available to them. Furthermore, engineered hardwood is resilient and versatile, offering great moisture and heat resistance, too.

    • Low – Basic engineered hardwood features three core layers topped with a single layer of the wood veneer. On average, the basic materials cost $3 to $5 per square foot.
    • Mid – A mid-range option features a thicker veneer with a five-layer core. Expect to pay $5 to $10 per square foot.
    • High – The top engineered hardwood features seven or more core layers with a thicker top veneer. Cost is around $8 to $13 per square foot.

Like traditional hardwood flooring, engineered hardwood flooring features an installation cost alongside the cost of materials. Expect to pay $3 to $10 per square foot.

    Hardwood Flooring Alternatives

If you do not want to spend the money on hardwood flooring, but still want the aesthetic, then you’re in luck. The flooring industry has produced a number of alternatives. For example:

    • Laminate Flooring
    • Cork Flooring
    • Leather Flooring
    • Bamboo Flooring

These are fine choices as an alternative to hardwood flooring. Each one offers its own unique benefits and disadvantages.
